Chamonix in Summer
In summer the beautiful valley of Chamonix attracts walkers, climbers, riders and anyone wanting to experience the adrenaline-rush of mountain sports or simply enjoy the beauty of the alps. Chamonix was the birthplace of mountaineering over 200 years ago and the town is steeped in history, the Alpine Museum provides a fascinating insight into the enduring appeal of the mountains.

This lively area has every activity and sport you could wish for, from parapenting and white-water rafting to golf, tennis, mountain biking and summer tobogganing. There is walking to suit all abilities and a network of cable cars, gondolas and chair lifts remain open throughout the season to either help you reach the start of a walk or to view the stunning scenery.

Summer activities we that we have tried and tested:

Hiking
Some short hikes that are particularly great include: Plan d’e L'Aguille to Montenvers (Mer de Glace), Index to Lac Blanc.
Both are fairly horizontal (not too steep) with fabulous views and peaceful surroundings. It also niceto pick up the petit balcon paths and going for a wander in the forests.

White water rafting
Greta fun is the white-water rafting through Chamonix town on the river Arve. This is suitable for children (i.e. not too white knuckle!) and offers an interesting perspective of the valley.

Climbing
Chamonix offers opportunities for people at all levels. If you are new to climbing a morning at a local crag with instruction will introduce you to the vertical world and help you find your head for heights.

Glacier walking
It is possible to experience the high mountains through hiking on a glacier. My initial experience was a day's orientation on the Mer de Glace, learning how to use crampons and an ice axe, a little about ice climbing but mainly clambering about looking down crevasses and enjoying the experience.

Mountain railways and Cable cars
There are two rack and pin railways and both are worth a trip. Its not possible to write about Chamonix and not mention the cable cars that are open in both summer and winter. The Aiguille du Midi cable car is an absolute must – but try to go in the morning as the weather can cloud over in the afternoon. Also amazing (but a little daunting) is the Helbronner gondola from Aiguille du Midi across to Italy. This is best done on a calm day.
